*Educational programme: First child who finishes the secondary school!!
Rogers Katumba, one of the children who has been following the educational programme of Maison des Enfants du Monde since 2004 in NorthRoad Secondary School, has passed successfully the final exam of the secondary studies. We are very happy of this news which proves that despite having given up the studies during a few years and living in the slums under extremely precarious living conditions, these children can succeed in finishing the school if we give to them the chance. At present, Rogers is going to start a Bachelor of Economics and Management in the "Uganda Christian University" for three years. We met Rogers in the slum of Katwe during our first visit to the project in October 2003, and we still remember how much we were impressed by the motivation and the willing he had to come back to school. * August 2004: Maison des Enfants du Monde´s trip to Uganda
Last August, the team of the Maison des Enfants du Monde travelled to Uganda to monitor the evolution of the projects that the Association has in place in Kampala to help street children and to prepare the projects to be implemented in 2005.
This was the occasion to meet all the children whom the association is supporting to and to see the ongoing projects. We had namely the opportunity to visit the primary and secondary schools where the children are enrolled. This allowed us talking to the Directors of these institutions and to the childrens’ teachers. They informed us on the childrens’ progresses, motivations and difficulties.
Furthermore, we visited the teenagers that are following professional trainings in different workshops around the city as from March 2004: sewing, hair dressing, carpentry, mechanics and welding. Further to these visits, we could chat with local artisans and appreciate the teenagers’ developments until present.
We visited as well some of the childrens’ families in the main slums of the capital (Katwe and Kisenyi). This experience showed us the difficult life conditions that they face.
On the other hand, we were invited to the big festive day that our local partner Uganda Children Centre (UCC) organises every Sunday in its own headquarters. 150 children who are participating to the different programmes join this weekly party, in which they receive a meal, enjoy the entertainment activities organised by the educators and are examined by a voluntary nurse if they wish so. We found that this was the suitable event to give the children the clothes, toys, school and sanitary material that both the members and those supporting the association had provided us before leaving to Uganda. In addition, these donations allowed us equipping the UCC Centre with extra medicines for the sanitary programme and toys, pencils and notebooks for the use of the children visiting the centre.
